It is believed that David descends from the Wetzel family t hat came from the Rhine River Areea of Germany preevious t o the Revolution, Namely Hans Martin in 1731, Johan Jacob i n 1737, Johan Werner in 1738, Jacobv in 1746, Hans George i n 1750, and Johannis in 1754. It was either the second or t hird of these who in 1740 settled in what is now Rockingha m County in the Valley of Virginia. thence his son John, bo rn in Switzerland 1733, migrated about 1767 to Wheeling Cre ek in the northern panhandle of West Virginia. This Captai n John was the Fatheer of Lewis, John, Jacob, Martin and Ge orge, all of whom were known as border warfare fighters dur ing the Revolution, and also as Indian fighters. Lewis an d Jacob were captured by Wyandot Indians at a young age bu t escaped. George was killed by Indians while hunting Lewi s became bitter and fought Indians until arrested and put i n prison. He died in Natchez, Mississippi. He never marriee d, so David is probably a son of Jacob, John or Martin. .

!Gravemarker reads " Neil Whelan, born Sept 14 1885. died march 17 1929, beloved husband of Mrs. Mildred Whelan." There is a partial (base only) headstone next to Neil's grave, which says "Whelan" this is like the grave marker of his parents as these are the only three Whelan's buried at Quiet Nook according to the marker listing all those buried here.

From Vina History page 1179 "Whelen, Richard (Dick) and Sara. by grandson Chester Whelen My grandparents, Richard and Sara Whelan came west with their family from Ontario in 1904. they first settled in Fort Saskatchewan, where Jim and Neil, the two oldest sons, worked in the jail for a while. From Fort Saskatchewan the Whelen family moved to the Vilna area. In 1905, Richard Whelan got a homestead in Stry, next to the Saddle Lake Reservation. That is where they lived out their remaining years.

In 1879 Philo White was living with his parents, the late W illiam and Chloe White, in the River Valley Community. A h ollow nearby in the Trent River was named White's Eddy as i t was a stopping place for the logs that were floated to Tr enton. Philo was a surveyor and a journalist. He wrote ma ny articles for American papers and the weekly Stirling pap er, telling of the settlement of Sidney and Rawdon Twps. Hi s daughter kept dozens of these clippings, but sad to say , a house cleaning crew destroyed them, in 1929. After hi s marriage he settled down on the farm where Harry McAdam n ow lives. He then headed his column Hubble Hills News. Ea rly in 1900 his daughter Azubah Ann (Mrs. Allan Wescott) co ntinued the work as Mount Pleasant News. Troubled by her r heumatic hands, she gave up reporting in 1911, and her gran d-daughter Florence wrote the news under her supervision.
