She was discovered by Isaac, lying in pool of blood, in the basement of her home with her throat cut. Called Lord Delaware, Third Baron, British born governor o f colonial Virgina. As a young man, he was implicated in the insurrect ion ofRobert Devereux, 2d earl of Essex, but was exonerated. A member o f thecouncil of the Virginia Co., in 1601 DeLaWarr was given a life appo intment as governor of the colony. He arrived at Jamestown with thre e ships and150 settlers, equipped at his own expense, just in time to brin gdesperately needed supplies to the original colonists and dissuade the m from returning to England. He rebuilt Jamestown, built forts, an d brought order to the colony. In 1611, he returned to England, where , in orderto promote support for Virginia, he wrote an account of his ex periences there. He remained in England as nominal governor until 161 8, when complaints against his deputy moved him to sail again for V irginia. He died on the voyage. The state of Delaware, which he was sup posedly the
first Englishman to visit, is named in his honor.
